KIM

Dr. Wonkyung Kim is a solo and collaborative pianist, educator, and scholar who earned both her Master of Arts and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Piano Performance from the University of Iowa. She currently serves as a collaborative pianist at the University of Iowa and as a member of the music faculty at Kirkwood Community College.

Originally from South Korea, Dr. Kim holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and a Master of Education in Music from Gachon University, where she graduated at the top of her class in the Master of Education program and received the President’s Award. Her extensive performance experience spans solo, collaborative, and interdisciplinary work in the United States, Asia, and Europe, including performances with vocalists, instrumentalists, ensembles, and orchestras.

Her artistic and scholarly interests center on Korean piano repertoire and the intersection of Korean and Western musical traditions. Her doctoral research included a performer’s guide and recording project developed in close consultation with pioneering Korean composer Young Ja Lee. A member of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), Dr. Kim has presented her research on Young Ja Lee’s piano music at the Iowa Music Teachers Association (IMTA) State Conference, and her writing on the subject has appeared in The Iowa Music Teacher.

As an educator, Dr. Kim has taught students of a wide range of ages and levels in both private and collegiate settings. She is also the creator of an Integrated Arts piano curriculum that combines piano instruction with movement, creative writing, visual art, and other creative activities. Her teaching emphasizes strong musical foundations, expressive communication, and creativity while helping each student develop confidence and an individual artistic voice.
